Actions Speak Louder Than Words

YES...a new post from me...FINALLY.  I am truly sorry that this has turned into once every 10 days or so...but at least I am doing what I can, when I can...just finished spending hours typing up sign up lists for people wanting to join existing sites, or start new sites, and getting emails out to them...and was just supposed to meet our Rapid City site coordinator for lunch...but realized that I had to do this first...see Bloggers...I am skipping out on lunch to get this done first!

Jess...from Des Moines...welcoming you and Wyatt to the blog...YAY!  We are so proud of him in SR!!  See you soon at a show, and thanks for the great comments on the last post.

To all...start talking up the Sizzlin' Summer Bash, and remember, if it takes some extra fundraisers to get gas budgets together at your site...then DO IT!  Many weeks until then, so Whatever It Takes...and holler if you all need help!

Finally, if you have not heard my latest additions to SR show-stories...I want to remind you all that you are GREAT PEOPLE...kids or adults!  Given my travel headaches of 2 weeks ago...and the fact that they were caused by misbehaving kids AND adults, I wanted to take the time in this blog to tell you all what great people you are...and how you show this by everything you do!  Too many people seem to get caught up in the wrong things anymore...the meaning of a word...the "drama/back story" behind something...personal selfishness...and they forget something so important...what you do reflects who you...what you say reflects who you are...and what you believe reflects who you are!  Daily, I see such great role models in SR...kids doing great things, being good to each other, empowering each other, being friends, and caring.  Daily I see such HORRIBLE things outside of SR...such as the broken elevator in Cleveland and the shattered dishes in Kansas City in the pool (these are my new stories you can look forward to)...and I just shake my head and wonder...WHERE did we go wrong in our country?  How has it gotten to the point that we can never see the good right in front of us...such as the good things you all do everyday...and why does only the bad get attention?

I would appreciate your comments on this, your feelings on this, and your blog chatter on this...so go for it!

  1. Steve- you know...you say that we are all good people. I say that you are an amazing person because you wouldn't know us to tell us we were good people if you had never started SR. So you are amazing and I am so happy to be a part of SR. (:

  4. Dee and I just had a conversation on SR and how awsome it is! I wish that everyone else could see that. My grandma still despises it and my brother thinks that it is just drums but it is so much more. Sure you could be in SR just to drum, but all of the people that I have met from it have either gone through something or are going through right now. We can all help each other and just be happy around each other withought worrying about who has the nicest things and looks the prettiest. We are who we are and one of the things that I get from SR is that you will never change. Just because you get older doesn't mean you turn into a completely different person, small things about you will change but deep down you will always be the same. So don't fight it, let it out. If people don't like it then that isn't your problem, it's theirs because they are missing out on a lot.

  5. Woot new blog! :D

wow Elizabeth!! We were just talking about this! :D I agree 100%. Some people do just think its drums and thats it...but it is soo much more. ha Elizabeth and I had a nice cry in our convo. last night. lol :) But it was a good cry.

I think it is crazy all the things that go on that people think is cool.I always wanted to go up to someone and ask them why they do the things they do, Because I truly dont understand why they do it.But I never do and probably never will. I think people who cause the drama, love the attention that comes with it.
I have to go right now. But I will write more when I can. :)

  7. In answer to Steve's question, why does the bad get all of the attention, I would have to say that this just reflects our society as a whole. When we believe that people should be good and courteous to each other, it makes it that much easier to single out the cases where people are, as Steve said, HORRIBLE to each other. We remember our grievances with each other more readily than we do the good times. Because the bad makes a bigger impression? Because we don't want to let go of it? I don't know. But I know that we are all guilty of looking at things through the 'glass-half-empty' mindset once in a while.

As a side note, it's official. I'm a graduate! And one of the things that I will remember more than anything else about last night was when one of my classmates found me after the ceremony and we shared a celebratory hug. Glass-half-full, guys. We probably won't see each other again. At least not until class reunions. But glass-half-ful, nevertheless.

  9. I know my earlier post has been removed, there was a lot of typos and it didn't make sense, sorry!!
Also, I LOVE everyones comments, good job!!

Now on the serious side, I'm not exactly sure how our country turned into such a mess. Maybe its because we are spoiled with our tv's and computers that we forget what we really need and what our values are. maybe its because people want to be noticed so they do bad things. But I also think the bad things get the attention is because people think its more fascinating. Also, isn't it easier to do bad than good sometimes???I also think that we are too judgemental. We want to "fit in" so we do stuff that maybe isn't right, but will make people notice us. It makes me really happy that I am in SR, in SR we just have fun. It doesn't matter who you are and what you look like, we just try to make everyone have a good time!

  12. Colleen- I don't like it when other people can't see past themselves. It really irritates me.
Dee- If you ever need to talk to someone I'm always around, even if I am so far away from you.
    SRdrummer4life- Who is Lizzy?

  14. Colleen- I also can't get it through my grandma and brother's heads what it is. Whenever I start talking about it, it is like they turn of their ears or they change the subject.

  15. Amanda- Yes us Missourians know about the blog. Drew should know about the blog because I talk about it all the time! And he just doesn't get on...that's his problem!!
Steve- I agree with Colleen 100%...If it weren't for you we wouldn't be talking on this blog or changing the world one step at a time. Because of YOU we all make a difference :)

  16. Jovanna- Can you believ you are done? I already had orientation at Wartburg and it still hasn't hit me that I graduated!
Steve- I'm so glad we got the chance to talkthe other night. It had been way to long, and I think just talking to someone helped me get rid of some of my stress. I also hope you are feeling better!
As for the question, it really is hard to say, but I would have to agree with Jovanna. We have talked about this a lot at camp, and how we have to be the positive role models for the girls that are here because it might be the only good they have in their lives until next summer.
Well I better get back to my unit, until next time I have Internet connection hve a great summer to all, and I miss you all!
    P. S. I was talking about SR at camp and some of my campers want to join!!!!

  18. FYI - Blog info went out a couple of times to site coordinators and also members. Some people don't like to use email. But it is still a good way to communicate.
Wow, that's a big word we don't do very often enough. And I don't understand parents who don't care what their kids are doing or don't set a good examples themselves. Adults need to hear the message as well as kids. Video games, computers, TV all take time away from simply talking. I love to hear people's voices like I love to sing to music. So when you are all practicing, doing mission projects or being part of an SR show, you are communicating: you care and you are being a friend and helping to change the world. Recently my son wished a friend of his had someone to talk to (my son played football with him). The young man gave up and took his own life. How do you understand that? It still haunts me and I know my son thinks about it to. So if you are thinking of someone, call them up. Maybe it's God giving you a message that someone needs you talk to you. Actions speak louder than words.

We are blessed with a wonderful group of kids who have changed many lives and have grown in their own faith along this journey we call Sheltered Reality.

Please come in August - Do whatever it Takes to get there. There's still housing for some and lots of other options. We'd love to see 150 drummers and families. We're working hard to make it happen!!

  22. Elizabeth- oh i know people like that too. you try to talk to them and its like trying to talk to a rock...pointless.

  23. Wow, I'm late. I should read the blog more often.

It's sad, isn't it, when people stop caring about each other. But there is still hope for the world. People like the ones you see in SR exist all over the world. Some are very willing to go out and do big things, others do small things anonymously, and some just need a little push. What SR does, is give people that little push to go out and help the world.

On an unrelated note, tomorrow my youth group leaves for St. Louis!

  24. Sonja, I agree.

Everyone, I mean I know I wouldn't be even close to the person I am today if it wasn't for SR. I have seen for years that this world is like going nuts. I mean as you all know I live in Georgia and yea I'm serious about this, Before I quit high i went to a local high school called Mitchell County High School. (Down here schools are done by counties, not towns) I only went to school for about 2 months and as you walked in the door each day you were searched. You had to walk through a medal detector and they searched everything even your pencil bag. Before I moved to Georgia I didn't ever think I would go to a school like that. I hated it. Its part of the reason I quit. Before I moved here I also believed there were no such thing as a gang. I thought they were just a thing that didn't really exist. Now I can't even turn on the news without a shooting or a bank robbery or something like that bein out over the news.

  25. Amanda- We had to go through metal detectors in a community center just to shower... That was new.

Anyways, some songs that might inspire everyone in their community service projects.
