SR Uber Wootin' Writers Blog #7 Dee~

Hello everyone! First blog post from me! :D
Do you guys remember your very first drum practice with SR? Do you remember if you were excited, scared, nervous, all of the above?  When was your first day? I started thinking about this when I was looking at pictures.  It’s mind boggling to look at pictures from four years ago, and then look at recent pictures.  You see how much people have changed, grown up, and become better people.   I think it’s awesome how much someone can change and become a better person when you are in an amazing group like SR. I love when you get new people that join your site, and you get to see them change/grow. At first they are always scared.  They try and look like they are having fun but still scared at the same time. And then pretty soon it’s been a month, then 6 months…, and soon you see them change and have more confidence in their self and start having fun. You get to see them play at their very first show.  I think its awesome being able to watch someone grow in SR.
At the Warren, Ohio Site we have a new member named Vince. He is so funny!  I walk in and he says hi and then asks me 1000 questions about beats, songs, everything.   He went on Sheltered Reality’s website and saw Lauren and Colleen’s picture.   He printed it out and asked me if it was them.  He was excited to find out it was.  He is so thrilled to be in this group and loves every minute of it.  He ALWAYS has a smile on his face and wants to help with anything he can.  He always tells me how he practices a lot.  He told me that he plays on boxes, and how he used to play on phonebooks until he started putting holes in them. :D  He gets beats so fast!  On beat accelerator, he’s on track 6! He is doing an awesome job.  He always says whatever you want to teach me, I’ll do it! Lol.  He seems to really enjoy drumming practices, and I’m happy about that.
Well, this is all I have for now! Super excited for the meeting next weekend!!!!! Woot! :D

  1. Dee-9 days!!!!! I can't wait to see you! Not that I'm counting or anything...my poor mother...what was she thinking to say yes to BOTH of us in the same room???

Thinking about my first practice I don't think I really reacted much. To be honest I don't remember much about it. What I do remember was showing up two days later to watch the group perform and 2 min before the show started Kay telling me I'm going to drum in the show. I really didn't do that bad! Corey said I faked it really well, and I remember my firstt show with Steve and Jordan and Jordan's comment about how I knew a certain song already and I said I had never actualy learned it...I guess that's how I learn a lot though. I even know some of the first reactions and opinions some people had of me. One of my site members, who is now a really close friend, hated me in the begining...cough cough MiMayla!!! Anyways, enough procrastinating, back to that huge paper due in a few short hours!

  2. Dee- i know, i can't believe it has already been 4 and a half years!!! We have all grown up together and are basically family :)

Well lets see...thinking back to my first practice, wow i was really nervous cause i had no idea what to expect. Meeting Chris for the first time was interesting lol. I was scared of him lol. After ahile though we all became friends and now we never stop talking to each other at practice (which we get yelled at for sometimes lol) but yea watching Sam and Sphia work their way up to confidence was so much fun and we all got close along the way :)

  3. I think everyone's scared/nervous for their first practice. And no one's ready for their first show. :p

I sure was nervous. I remember looking around at everyone and thinking that they all looked like such close friends that how would I ever be able to be part of it? Coming in after they'd already formed such close bonds. But it's like Steve says, SR people are just different. I mean, apart from SR, none of us would even know of each other. Where else could all of these people coming together from so many places actually get along and work together? I still look at the variety of people that make up SR. We've got jocks and band geeks and every other imaginable stereotype--but we all get along. Again, it's a God thing.

  4. My kids were drummers in SR before I was, so I just stood around a watched them play. But, I was asked to lead a show a few years ago (horrors) and I was determined to drum if I was going to lead. So, actually, my first real practice was a crash course from Steve learning the show songs. That show was a little stressful - first time leading and drumming. Thankfully I had some good, experienced drummers beside me to get me through. Talk about being a friend.
I've enjoyed watching everyone grow over the years and gain self-confidence. I like knowing people from all over the country. So many people are amazed that drummers can come together from different states and perform all the same songs.
Oh, yeah, the meeting. I'm excited to see everyone but I've got a lot of work to do to get ready for it!

  5. well, if you do not know me, I just have to put it out there that I am an overly outgoing person. So I for sure was not nervous at all cause I really didnt care if I was going to be liked. If it happened it happened and if not then so be it. Plus there were TONS of newbies at my first practice, but I never really thought about that.

For my first show I just went to watch, not play, but well somehow I ended up playing. I was nervous for that. There was no hiding spot either. haha

  6. I remember my first practice....I was slightly scared, nervous, and EXTREMELY shy!! I still am shy but not even close to the shy I was last year!!I didn't say much of anything at that practice....now I get to ask new people the questions I was asked and get to help teach them songs! I love seeing how people change over just a few short months in SR. It is absolutely astonishing!!

This week has been pretty rough. I have been very tired and worn down and I have no clue why. It is only 8:30 right now and I am going to bed. I am definitely far from myself. I'm not the crazy Peanut I usually am. Practice tomorrow with Steve, so I have to be Peanut tomorrow! Love you all :)

We don't travel that much with the exception of Steve and Jordan nut we really do change the world around us :) It is good to hear that we aren't tht only group of people that love to change and help other peoples' lives :)

  9. I actually was a site coordinator for over 3 years before I started drumming. I did guest drumming a couple of times prior becoming a drummer.

I actually remember my first Steve/Jordan practice. They were showing working us on 2 new songs. Really got me second guessing the drumming part.

    I'm still drumming though.

  10. My first practice was almost a year ago now... I was so nervous I almost told my dad to turn around and go home. I really considered it. I'm so glad I didn't!

I was so worried that I wouldn't fit in or make friends. Boy was I wrong!

This blog post is especially well timed for me, because yesterday last year was the Cardboard Box City in St. Paul where I saw you guys! It has officially been one year and a day since SR has been in my life in some way, shape or form! Next Thursday I will be playing at that show. Crazy!

  11. Kelli- I know right?!?!?!?! :D nahh we will be good ;) maybe..ish. :p SSSSSSSIIIIIIIXXXXXXXXX daysss!!!

Colleen-I know! I was like man...thats awesome...4.5 years. Tears in my eyes because of how much fun I've had and ALL the pictures I have. Love it :) and I met Chris before SR. I don't remember exactly when though... maybe VBS? not sure lol.

Jovanna- ha very true. and I agree and like very much what you said about how SR is made up of a variety of people, and how its a God thing. I totally agree. It is an awesomse thing!

Brenda-can't wait to see you again. :))

Kristen- I hope you had a good practice with Steve :) I hope you feel better soon. I get that way too. It's weird.. I hate when it happens..because I'm not acting the way ii usually do. Most of the time when that happens I'm thinking about things.

Tonia- I looked at the website also! Thats pretty awesome! Just like Colleen said, it's awesome know there are other people out there that are changing the world.

Sonja- That's awesome!! One year! Woot!!! :D good job!! You are doing an awesome job

My first paractice..(forgot to write mine. lol) I remember walking in with my sister Sarah and her mom, and everyone was there, even Steve and Jordan. I just wanted to watch but they made me play. I remember we were all on the floor drumming. It was so fun! I didn't want it to be over. I remember coming home and thats all that I talked about for the longest time. hmm.. I guess I still do that. :D

  13. Haha, I'd love to know how many people never had any intensions of joining, but did so after they were forcibly drafted into playing one song. That would be a good poll or something. Why did you join?
