~SR Uber Wootin' Writers Blog #17: Amanda~

Hey Everyone!!!!! Happy Easter!!!!!! In past years SR would normaly have anywhere from 80-116 drummers on the stage in front of Mt. Rushmore. I know all of you have lots of memories of being up at 5 AM or sooner just to get ready and be at Mt. Rushmore at 6am for set up. We all of memories of the late nights in the hotels and the family time we get when to go out and play.We all have memories of Mt. Rushmore.

So my question for all of you is what is your favorite memory/memories of going out to Mt. Rushmore??

  1. My favorite memory is the first time Alex went to MTR. There were alot of drummers and the weather was beautiful (in the 70's). It was such a thrill to see all these kids act like they had know each other all their lives, expressing their joy at sharing the message of SR and the breathtaking sunrise coming over the MTR faces and the stage with all those drums and drummers.
We were videotaping the show while enjoying the expressions of not only the drummers but the audience. Then Steve started a story about one of the SR kids and his family. As he kept going, I suddenly realized he was talking about us. At this time, our family was experiencing financial difficulties and I wasn't sure if we were going to make the trip but I knew how important it was to Alex so I never gave up to find a way there.
Steve called us up on stage and told us how the group had gathered money and gift cards which helped pay our way to MTR and back plus had some extra to pay some bills. I just can't explain the emotions that ran thru me but most of all, my belief that there are truly good people in this world came back. This group never judged us for our difficulties, instead they showed care, concern and support.
So this trip was very emotional and special in my book but all the trips we made to MTR have been great ones. I thank God every day for us being in this SR family.
I also want to once again thank Steve, Jordo and all of the SR group for all that they do-you do make a difference in peoples' lives!

  2. I honestly don't know if I could pick just one favorite. The stories and messages Steve gives during at MTR are usually the best of the year. I think it's a pity we can't share our faith as openly in other places, because that's honestly the only thing that keeps me coming back. I love SR for the drums, but if we don't give them God, we don't give them anything.

  3. So I only can say I attended 1 MTR weekend and that was in 2010. I remember little things like trying to figure out if someone could still play on Sunday, trying to find housing (thanks Melinda) and even finding people to follow so that I felt comfortable driving a teenage boy safely to/and from Rapid City. But I am so glad I was able to go because I was able to reconnect with several friends after a some what interesting (so to speak) winter and meet new friends, but what I will always remember and hold dear... is hearing the members talking after practice about how they see SR as the faith based organization that it is. Then hearing Steve talking about this during the show on Sunday. I know that this was something that I personally needed to hear at that time. I was so happy that not only the kids, but adults could see what many, either by chose or blindness, can not see.

  4. My favorite year would have to be last my last year there. I would have to say the best part was the 9 hour drive with my sister (Kelli Jo Lair). She is my sister and after being apart for a long time 9 hours did us good. Then after the show on Sunday we were standing around talking to everyone for nearly an hour if not more and then we left and we needed to kill time before we were going to go to the Rapid City site practice with Steve and Jordan. Then we seen a sign that said Dinosaur park and if you know Kelli or I you would know we jumped at the chance and we started to drive toward Dinosaur Park. When we pulled up I knew I was in trouble there were tons of steps and I was sore from all the steps from MTR and the 7 hour practice the day before. Well when if came to the steps at Dinosaur Park I swear it took me 5-10 minutes to get up all the stairs. I was so sore!!! Mean while Kelli took the opportunity to take pictures of me and my challenge with the stairs. Once I reached the top we started taking pictures with the Dinosaurs and it was amazing!!!! It is one memory i will never forget. :) Thanks to my sister Kelli Jo Lair!!!!
