~SR Uber Wootin Writers Blog #2-Sonja~

A few of you may remember when Steve had us discuss song lyrics a long long time ago. You had some awesome answers, so I figured we could try doing it again. This song is called Give Me Your Eyes.

Look down from a broken sky
Traced out by the city lights
My world from a mile high
Best seat in the house tonight

Touch down on the cold black top
Hold on for the sudden stop
Breathe in the familiar shock
Of confusion, and chaos

All those people going somewhere, why have I never cared?

CHORUS:
Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see

Step out on a busy street
See a girl and our eyes meet
Does her best to smile at me
To hide whats underneath
There's a man just to her right
Black suit and a bright red tie
To ashamed to tell his wife
He's out of work, he's buying time

All those people going somewhere, why have I never cared?

CHORUS

I've been there a million times
A couple of million eyes
Just move and pass me by
I swear I never thought that I was wrong
Well I want a second glance
So give me a second chance
To see the way you see the people all along

Discuss: What does it mean to see through God's eyes? How can we do this? How does this fit in with what SR is doing? Have you ever truly felt you've seen things though God's eyes? Anything else that comes to mind when you read these lyrics is fine for discussion as well. These are just to get you started!

  1. Nice, Sonja! Nice.

Ok, well this will, needless to say, be a very incomplete answer. But I will give it my best shot.

Seeing through God's eyes means shedding our prejudices and dislikes of other people. It means looking at them as brothers and sisters in Christ and loving them as love ourselves. I don't know that I can go on explaining this in any other way, so I won't try to. I'll just go on to Sonja's last question.

And the answer is yes. I do feel that I've seen one person through God's eyes. I think that it's a hard place to come to, and not something that you can even try to do. For me, it just happened unexpectedly - and I think it's because God wanted to show me what Jesus truly meant when he commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

It was last winter during the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. I, of course, was keeping up with the medals, just like everyone else, and particularly looking forward to the men's snowboarding so that I could watch the amazing flying tomato. (And of course, I was cheering America for everything else too.) Here's the thing, though - I have a Canadian friend who was just burning with pride for Canada. Every time Canada won a medal, I heard about it through her or the news, and after a few days I realized that I just didn't care about America winning anymore. I began to cheer every time Canada won another gold because I knew that my friend would be simply ecstatic about it.

It's hard to describe why, but through the olympics, I began to love her in exactly the way that Jesus tells us to love our neighbors. I was setting aside my own national pride and taking part in her joy, which was infinitely greater than my own when America won a gold.

I don't know that I've conveyed this very well. I guess I could end my babbling by saying that it is the end of my week of orientation and so my brain is fried. If none of this makes sense, that's why.

  2. I agree with all of Jovanna's answers! She took the words out of my mouth! God intends for us to live without all the hatred and judgmental thoughts that the American society has from day to day. We can see through God's eyes by putting all the judgmental thoughts behind us and live our lives without it all. SR is a family. We consider each other brothers and sisters. And we live without a care in the world. I have seen many things through God's eyes. And it is a great feeling to see everything through his eyes.
I absolutely love Give Me Your Eyes. It has a great message and it's just an awesome song and it fits.

  3. Totally agree with Jovanna and Kristen. Love this song!!!! I think it is us asking God to share His wisdom so that we can make better choices and be more understanding of life and the world in general. (If that makes sense)I will write more when I get back on.

  4. Great answers! I loved your story, Jovanna!

I don't even know the answers to my questions yet, and I'm tired so I'll do it later.

My youth group was on a missions trip when I first heard this song, when my pastor made us memorize it. Because of that, it has a lot of meaning to me. It makes me think of service, mostly, looking through God's eyes to see people's pain and the then reaching out a hand to them. Kinda. It's hard to put it into words.

  5. Jovanna and Kristen- you two took the words from my mouth...

to see through gods eyes is to really understand a persona nd what they are going through. if they need a hug give them a hug, if they need a should to cry on your there for them. This fits in with SR cause we are all about helping others and putting smiles on peoples faces

  6. These are great answers - full of insight. I really like this song, too, because of its message. It reminds me about what we've been studying in Sunday School - it's all about love. God loves us perfectly, just as we are - that is how we are to love others. What would the world be like if more people would love others as God does?

  7. I agree with Brenda. God does love us all no matter how we are. No body is perfect. We all make mistakes. We're all suppose to all other just like God loves us.
