Against All Odds: SITE challenge #1!!

After much waiting and anticipating and excitement, Easter Mega Weekend has come and gone...AGAIN.  It is amazing how fast things we look forward to so much can go, and how quickly our time together is over...but then, part of the fun in life is waiting for something, looking forward to it, enjoying it, and then, taking time to reflect back on it!  (While starting to look forward to the next exciting event in life, whatever that may be!).

Therefore, this is what this blog is about.  I want each of you who were able to attend Easter Weekend to write something about it...what did it mean to you?  What did it show you?  How did it change you?  Who did you meet?  What did you learn that was new (drums or beyond?)  How did being at the Shrine Of Democracy make you feel (besides cold!)  How did it affect your view on what it means to truly succeed at something?

If you were unable to go, then please comment on other comments as you read them...in other words, make a connection with someone who was able to go!

Further, if you were not there, then you are not aware of the "Steve Talk" theme at mega practice this year, which was "Against All Odds".  After a terrific mega practice day, we sat down, and I shared what I felt that day...that we were showing what can be done together in God's world, and against all odds.  I reminded the 116 drummers (our biggest number of SR members together EVER!) that none of them would have ever met each other had it not been for God giving all of us the drum as our tool to connect with, to work with, to laugh with, to meet/greet with, and to change the world with...and we all need to be Thankful for His Blessings each and every day...in all SR setting AND in the rest of our daily lives!  It is awe-inspiring, goose-bump inducing for me to watch this many of our members playing, dancing, working, uniting, connecting, befriending, laughing, eating, inner-childing (a great word!), and WOOTING all together!  I even received my official Woot Woot club shirt (and if you don't know what that is, or you don't have one yet, you need to be on the blog more often!).  I was proud of all of you...whether you were there for the first time or the fifth, whether you are a long running drummer or brand new, whether you are shy our outgoing, whether you are young or adult...you were all united, together, loving the Lord, and changing the world...and you all need to take a moment and reflect on it...and be thankful for it...and be proud of yourselves!

If you want to see TV clips of the service...just google Mt. Rushmore Easter Sunrise Service, and they should be there.  Post a link here if you want to...

And, now, for the first official Steve Blog Site Challenge!

THE FIRST SITE TO HAVE EVERY DRUMMER COMMENT HERE...whether he/she went to MTR or not...(so, again, if you went, talk about it here.  If you did not go, talk TO someone's comment on here...there is nothing to be shy about on here, and there are NO right or wrong answers at all!)...the first site that has all members make ONE comment here, about this topic, wins a pizza part at the next National practice, courtesy of Steve.  If you have members that have yet to even read the blog, then LOAD THIS BLOG UP AT PRACTICE and share it with each other.  Don't make it a negative experience for those not used to reading things online...instead...make it fun...share why you love it, and what you are getting from it, and help others see that the more ways we make a connection to each other...the better!

So, again, the first site in which all members post something here about this topic wins a pizza party...now get to it...Whatever It Takes!

  1. Oh I like the idea of bringing it up at practice! Since most of our site is so young none of them read the blog. I shall do this Sunday!

I had an amazing time at this Mega weekend and can't wait for the next one. :) I will post more when I'm home from school today about what I learned and who I met. It was a learning experience for me I know that!

We are doing a second order of the Woot Club shirts if anyone who is a reader of the blog wants one let me know. I have a list started, but if you want one I need to know by Friday, April 9! Can't wait to see everyone again soon!

  2. I agree; bringing it up @ practice is a really great idea! MTR was amazing! It was like this blog came to life! I met lots of people, many of whom I had talked to on FaceBook or this blog, and really enjoyed playing for everyone there. It was awesome to see the audience particpate, like in Surrender. I think MTR helped me learn to not be quite so nervous in front of crowds, and to be more outgoing. It makes me really glad to be part of such a united, awesome group of people!

Also---I'd like a Woot Club shirt, please!

  3. I totally agree with bringing it up at practice! I will try to on Sunday!! I really wish I could have gone to MTR but I really did enjoy California :) If anyone needs a change in scenery....go to CALIFORNIA!!

And I too would like a Woot Club shirt :)

  4. Okay now I'm home...I also learned that members I have never met before can really inspire me. Luke is amazing! I had so much fun being next to him at practice and talking to him through out mega practice. Chad is also awsome. I haven't had that much fun at a practice in a long time! Even if I did twist my knee yet again.

I also learned that I HATE driving vans in windy conditions and they eat gas like none other! I was not expecting that van to be so expensive to fill up and about had a stroke when it was $80 on the first fill up!

I learned that I am perfectly fine traveling that far on my own, and I am able to become creative in times of need. I have traveled long distances for SR shows before, but I have been with someone every time. Nashville is the only acception to that but that was flying, a completly different story than driving, without adult suppervision. I think it really helped me to open my eyes and make me realize how much time I have left before college becomes a reality for me.

I'm so glad that I could finally meet everyone for the blog, but when you gave us the "assignment" to go talk to three people we didn't know during the break it was really hard to find someone who didn't know me!

David and Kristen- I am sending you a facebook message, please respond!

  6. Wasn't able to get to MTR this year (long story!). Have been there the last 2 years first with Rachel drumming and last year both of us drummed. So this year seemed like a let down. It is truly a memorable time. Being able to meet new people during Mega Practice (Alec) and see old friends (Amanda, Kelli, Alex, Kaitlin, MiKayla, Sam, etc), chat with others poolside (Tom), and just get to know members of our own site better. It is those lasting friendships that get made and grow over time.

Plus it's usually great jump start for a lot of SR sites when they get back home. (Can't wait to hear all the exciting things at practice.)

It's amazing to see everyone coming together from all over for a common cause. Spreading the SR message and being able to see a larger vision of what Sheltered Reality is. I love swaping ideas with everyone and looking at all the neat things that everyone brings.

Really missed it this year. Can't wait for the summer Mega Practice!!!

  7. i didnt get to go to Mt Rushmore this year, like my mom (karen)said long story. but the 2 years before that ive gone and had a really good time, because i got to meet new people from other sites and last year i got to see people that i havent seen in a while. i liked mega practice because everyone was together in that one gym but it was cool to see and meet people.

  8. Hmmm, Steve, i don't remeber talking about this today!!!! Anyway I LOVED MTR! i am going to miss it alot! I loved meeting people, even though my shyness got in the way of meeting people (such as Sonja and Dee) anyway, i'm still glad to be part of it! I still hurt from the practice though

Kelli- I loved those shirts! Can i have one!!

  9. To all of my SR Friends:

I have still not came down from the wonderful mountaintop experience that I had Sunday at the foot of Mt Rushmore.

Words cannot really describe the experience of joining 115 other drummers from 10 states and 2 foreign countries to play the Easter sunrise service. Not to mention the happiness that was brought my way by the new friends that I met in the Sheltered Reality family.

Steve said it right when he told the group at the Mega-practice talk, that I should have not been there Saturday. I should really be dead!
I was given less than a 50% chance of surviving my auto accident in 2005, but God gave me a second chance. He was not finished with me.

And when I first saw Sheltered Reality at the Iowa State Fair in 2006, I was barely moving with a cane or walker. But I knew at that moment that I had to be a part of that group. (I feel that God was calling me to make that decision). It took a few years for me to get here, but I have never given up and now I am giving my thanks back to Him.

Not many of you saw Steve hug me on Sunday and say, " it is a good day to be alive." For me that had deeper meaning than just a trite, often repeated phrase. It brought tears as I thought of what could have happened on New Year's Day of 2006. I have been so pumped that I forgot that I was tired until arriving home.

I have really began to see a closeness in our Des Moines group that was not there for awhile, and I want all of you to know how much I want to see our site grow during this upcoming year. I want to share my passion for the group with others, but i need all of your prayers and support in helping me do this.

Also, not many of you may know how much it makes a "old man" feel like a "big kid" when playing along with a group of such an age range. But being accepted as part of a site group, and now by many members of other sites as part of the larger family of SR, is so humbling. I can't begin to get teenagers to talk with me in our hometown — and I own and publish the local newspaper.

Thanks to all who have accepted me as a member of the SR family. I hope our paths cross many times at shows this year, and invite all of you to connect with me on facebook or by e-mail.

This was one of the greatest moments of my life, and you all made it happen for me.

  11. So. I have like a ton of reasons why I liked SD and had way fun! At first I have to say I was kinda scared to go. Or not scared but can't think of the specific word. Anyways, because first I wasn't even supposed to go and then we went anyways it was like even better.

So somethings I liked was meeting new people, like Amanda who I've heard so much about! And talking with Elizabeth and so on :) And meeting the other exchange student Runar was wayyy cool too! And hanging in the hotel lobby!

And as an experience, it was something I so wont forget. Too bad I'm alreaydy in Finland when the summer megapractise is haha.

And I would've never gone to South Dakota either so now I've been there too!

Chuck - I couldn't even tell that you've gone through something as dramatic as the car accident! It's amazing how good you are doing! We all should just be thankful of everyday!

And Kelli - I payed already for the shirt, right?

  12. Ha! This challenge of Steve's has generated some of the longest responses I've seen on the blog! I'm enjoying reading them.

Well, I'd like to start out by saying how much I enjoyed the MEGAspaghetti meal! Thanks to everyone who had a hand in preparing it. It provided a further chance for so many of us to continue getting to know eachother. By that time we were all so tired out from the Mega practice, though no one would have known it by the way we ran around like little kids during the easter egg hunt and all of the fun we still managed to have while we ate.

I also want to send a shout-out to Dave, Elizabeth, and Drew. Your song literally brought tears to my eyes. What team work! I would like to learn it some time. And excellent song choice - I've always loved that one. :)

Those two things were great highlights of the weekend, but by far my favorite bit of it was the 'Steve Talk' during Mega practice - and, more specifically, when he asked us all to share the meaning of Easter AND how our drums relate to that message. There were some great answers all around, and I truly think we need to do more of that - both nationally at MEGA events and as individual sites.

Especially when we're doing school shows and other community events where we're not allowed to bring in our most important step, I think it's easy for us to forget about the most important reason we've rallied around the drums an the message of the one drum lesson. It's all to the glory of God.

    Happy Easter, all.
    Jovanna

--And thanks for the extra jacket on Sunday, Derek. I needed it. :)

  15. This past weekend was the best. I miss everyone like crazy already. For you that dont know because of this past weekend and some of my friends in SR I will be moving back to Iowa and rejoining SR.

This past weekend was amazing. It was my first thing i did for SR since November so it was nice to be back with a pair of sticks in my hands. I was so happy (I haven't been that happy since November honestly) Practice on Saturday was amazing!!!!! It killed my feet and legs but it was totally worth it. Today is the first day my legs haven't hurt since Saturday/Sunday. Woot!!!! Honestly though the time i got to be with my friends and family again was totally worth the pain.

  16. This weekend was really awesome! I was so glad to see everyone I have not seen in such a long time as well as new people I have not heard of. I am sure now that I know a lot more people. Even though I have not been to many shows this year, this huge show and practice made such an impact on me of all the people in SR. The greatest thing was I got along with everybody and made sure that they knew I was there to be a friend and do good! Woot! (By the way, it was really nice to see Colleen and Dee! Especially since they are so awesome! But also, it was nice to see people from Ohio that came to MTR! Tom: Awesome job at practice and the show! You were awesome to stand behind during the show because I saw you dancing even at the parts in the song where there was no choreography!)
The greatest thing was the show because I saw smiles on everybody at least once and although I was pretty sick that day, I was having the best time during that show! It was definitely the best year out there at Mount Rushmore, I thought! Hopefully you all had fun as well, and for those who did not go, do you not worry. There will be an infinite amount of Mega Shows and Mega Practices for the future I am sure.
Like Steve said off the lyrics on the Madyday Parade song, it does not matter where you go to, it's the importance of everyone you meet and travel with!

  17. This was my first time at Mega Practice, thankfully I was able to go.

As Kelli said it was great to put names and faces together. It was especially nice to meet Amanda.

It was wonderful seeing everyone working together. Everyone really did help others succeed during both days of the events. There were so many little things that happened that everyone may not have noticed. But all those little things helped others.

The answers given by the members to Steve's questions during his talk were amazing and something I'll never forget. There are always people out there that will ask how can a group playing drums be faith based and never forget that just because we don't "preach" we are faith based (Preaching sometimes is not as good as actions).

Now as far as the Shrine of Democracy, it was amazing to see 116 drummers on stage and knowing why we were there. Not only knowing that each one of the drummers did "Whatever It Takes" to get to MTR but that there were some members that truly took a chance and participated in the event. At the end of the service it was great to hear the thank yous and that whether or not the hosting churches realized this they also did "What ever it Takes" (someone had to clean the slush off the steps) to host this event every year. Each person involved with the service really did this to worship, not just to be there. We were truly there to praise and worship and not just for a show.

Thanks to everyone, this is truly a memory I'll never forget.

  20. Hey. I wasnt able to go this year or last year. =[ But hopefully next time I can try to go.
Because I didnt go to the Mega Practice I will share one of my most favorite memories since being in sr.
    The Lincoln, Nebraska State Fair. We all had one of our best shows! After me and my friend Kyle walked around and hid from our parents {Yeah we got in alot of trouble but it was fun}

So Happy that you all had a great time.

  21. I had an AMAZING time at MTR! I had a blast sitting in a hotel lobby watching the antics of my fellow drummers. I got to get to know some of my site members better, and meet people I've only met on the Internet in real life! Plus, I met people I didn't even know over the Internet! I was SO happy to meet the people I did, and hope that I get another chance to meet everyone I missed. (Like Autumn, for example)

It always blows me away how welcoming everyone I've met in SR is. You don't see people like that enough anymore. I used to wonder where they all went. I guess they were all right here in Sheltered Reality the whole time! I'm so glad I found you guys!

I'm sure I have more to say, but I need to go study now...

Chuck- It was great to get to drum next to you at Mega practice! Your story is amazing and you are awesome! I was so impressed that you just walked right up to me and said hi and started chatting! Your enthusiasm got me a little more willing to introduce myself to more people, so thank you for that. :)

  22. This was my third year going to MTR and this year I think I had more fun because I got to meet a lot more people and also i think i got more meaningfull out of the Steve talk this year than the past 2 years.

  23. Steve- I honestly did not know about this post when I sent you that message. I'm not even sure if I sent it before or after this was posted. :)

My message to Steve said that while I was at Mount Rushmore, I found a new sense of courage and broke out of my shell. I realized that my life is perfect the way it is and would never change it for anything. I believe that I was friendlier to my guest drummer and easily made small talk which before MTR was extremely difficult. Anyway Mount Rushmore I think just made me a stronger person.

    Rebekah N,Des Moines

Chuck- I don't know if I have told you this or not but just in case I havn't, I think you make an incredible asset to our site, you and Runar. You have really helped us get through our dilemma in Des Moines. So thank you for joining!

  24. I love all the comments so far! :D
Well this year meant the world to me, it was truly an amazing year. Yes, it did go by REALLY fast but it was soooo awesome, so moving, so fun, that it totally made it work. (If that makes sense.) I was so excited for MTR, I was counting down at Christmas how many more days. This year was the best! I got to meet and talk to awesome people and the made my day!

I got home from this amazing advancer at 7am today(Wednesday) and I didnt want it to be over. I had soooo much fun meet new people and see all these drummers playing and talking and all that awesome stuff and i don’t even know. It was truly amazing. As I sat there in the car I thought about every thing that happened at MEGA practice and the show and it made me what to cry. This year was amazing. I loved every part of it! Even when I fell ;)

I was very sad that I didn’t get to talk to Sonja as much as I wanted to, and I didn’t get to talk to Autumn at all. >_< I was very sad but I will sooner or later! :) I got to meet my twin!! It was awesome! Mikayla!!! :D She signed my shoe! LoL and we did the Easter egg hunt together! I got to play by Amanda at Mega practice and that was sooo much fun! Then at the show I got to play by Elizabeth and Steve. I miss everyone sooo much man. I had such a good time so many amazing stories and memories love it! cant wait for the summer one now!!

I want to thank everyone who signed my shirt! :D I love it! Woot!

Well I must get off and go to sleep. still haven’t slept much and im so tired but I might write more tomorrow!

Ohh yeah!! I had a BLAST with Tori, Devin, and Tom!! We all drove together and we switch a lot between cars. I switched and went in there car and I had soo much fun! man, I don’t think I have ever laughed soo hard and so long in my life! :D Great memories!! :D When we were saying our lfinal good byes I felt like I was going to cry! 25. I was amazed so many people made the effort to get to Rapid City. It can certainly be a long drive! I'm glad everyone had a safe trip. I enjoyed the road trip with my fellow Tipton site drummers! (spiffy clouds over the smiley earth)
Thanks to Autumn and Colleen for being great practice partners! Autumn, I'd never have guessed you're shy :)
I agree, it's great to be able to put faces with names - I wish I could've had the chance to talk to everyone!
Angie - I agree 100% with what you said about being faith-based.
Jovanna - I wish I could have heard your answer to Steve's question, but I was in the back :(
Hope to see all of you (and more) in St Louis at the Mega-weekend!

  28. For starters i am very happy to be able to reconnect to the internet after not being able to for a while.
Easter this year was really truley amazing for me. I met everyone i talk to on the blog that went to Mt. Rushmore and it truely was amazing. i am still awestruck by how many people can go to one place and practice for one common goal. it blows my mind. I was on stage and during the first song on the last beat i broke my drumhead...and had to play that wasy through Cuba Libre during the service... that was interesting. I heard that a couple of other people broke theirs too. :) i had so much fun!!!

  29. Colleen- Yeah, the kid next to me had his split all the way across the drum on Everdream. That's when I learned that cold weather and drumming are not the best combo...

Dee- We will get to hang out for a decent amount of time someday! :)

Thank you all for this awesome Experience and for accepting me into the SR Family!
This was my first year to the Mega Practice and To the Mount Rushmore Easter Sunrise
service, and through this Experience i learned that all of us drummers can come together and do an amazing thing by showing others how we can succeed and share our knowledge about our Awesome GOD!He died on the Cross and Rose from the Dead Just so we can have a truly awesome life!
My favorite choreography moves and song is YMCA!
Overall thank you all so much for making my life awesome and worth living for! I LOVE LIFE!!!!...:)

  31. I had a blast! I was so happy to get to meet so many new people, and reconnect with some! I agree that it was incredible to get to put names with faces. I think my favorite part was when we got to discuss the questions what is easter and what do we do at mtr that goes with easter? because the second one really made me think. And I learned some new things.

MTR has helped me grow as a person, I had a black eye the entire weekend and I started by wearing sunglasses the entire time because I was so self conscious...black eyes are really ugly. I think that at mega practice I also was embarrassed even with the sunglasses on and at times I didn't wanna talk with new people, but as Mega practice went on I started to get slightly annoyed by the sunglasses and in time I realized that who cares If I had a black eye and didn't even have a cool story to back it up. (my dog thought my face was her ball she some what lacks intelligence, so her snout hit my eye really hard she is a golden retriever)I can still be myself and met great new people...who cares if they judge.

  32. Tonia- I like your story about your black eye!

  33. I had a blast, like everyone else! There were several things that stuck out to me. First, seeing a gym FULL of drummers was mind blowing! Literally and figuratively. LOL! The whole "Against All Odds". Really, what are the odds of gathering all of us together? Wow! I'm actually kinda bummed I didn't get to meet as many people as I had hoped. Next time! The logistical process required to do all this blows my mind too. Obviously, you all have had lots of practice! LOL!

The SR Disease/God Virus is just amazing. The way we all inspire eachother and others is unbelievable! I can't put into words....

Looking up at MT. Rushmore, I reflect on the foundations of our nation- Rooted in GOD, founded on freedom and unified for democracy. Several times I had to stop thinking about where we were and what we were doing...I was going to start bawling. In my mind, we represented what the "United" States and the world is supposed to be like- A diverse group unified for good for the glory of God. I'm not a political person but, it seems like our country is pretty far off track!

It was great to meet those that I did like Kelli, Erica, Abbey, Devin, Ryder just to name a few! And great to see some of you again! Hope to make it to the Mega summer!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jen-It was good to meet you too!
Erica-I liked 'YMCA' as well except for the attacking cymbal (Thanks Kristian!) I have a sweet looking bruise from it though!

  36. Kelli- Aaaahhhhhh! The Attacking Cymbol!! Run away!!!
    Amanda- haha, nice. :)
Brenda- I'm sorry... my voice doesn't carry very well. :(

  37. Devin- I watched your videos! You did an awesome job! They turned out really cool!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sonja- yea i heard that only a few people broke their drum heads...

Jenn and Tonia- i loved both of your stories about how mount rushmore and the whole experience has changed you :)

  39. Well, this year, this mega-practice/show (as well as all of these comments) has really succeded in making me feel old. When Steve called for the kids who had been to Mt. Rushmore for all five years, and the only ones to stand were myself and the other original memebers of the Twin Cities group, I realized just what position I have gotten myself into. Thinking back to that first year, I think the practice was at a boys and girls club, and realizing that just about all those kids, who I had looked up to and relyed on when I was lost, were gone ended up reminding me of the responsibilities that come with being in the group so long. The realization that I now have to be the example was both humbling and kinda awesome, as I now have the opprotunity to try and help other members have the kind of fun, moving, and all around amazing experience that I have had with SR.

I also thought about how much this group has evolved in the nearly 6 years (I think) that I have been involved in it. Not only has the ability level reached heights I never would have imagined back then (the Follow Me failure), but we've also established an amazing level of community that has become palpable no matter how little we know each other.

This sense of community is something that I find very appropritate in the setting of Mt. Rushmore, a symbol of our nation. In this time when it seems more and more people are creating giant rifts between themselves on any type of issue, we've been able to come together and celebrate the things we have in common, despite our other differences, a perfect homage to George Washington, who in his farewell adress as president, warned us against creating "factions' within our nation. I think SR is a great example of how this can happen.

  40. This was the best weekend I've had in a long time. Practice was awesome and I really got to learn run it back better than I have before. Steve's talk at the end of practice really moved me, I will remember this day for a long time. SR means so much to me and my kids. Thanks Steve and Jordan, God Bless.

but i had so much fun drumming next to you and Runar (even though it took awhile to get used to his accent) and i will always remember how much fun it was just getting to know you and even Autumn who was over a drum from you :) I will always carry these memories with me.

  46. So happy to hear these awesome stories and there should be so many more to read. It's the SR magic that is sprinkled about that God has His Hand in. This is what makes it all worth the drive, cold weather and away from family on Easter. You all pulled my heart strings and also made me laugh. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of you at the Summer weekend in St. Louis.

  47. This was my third year going to Mt.Rushmore and the BEST EVER!!! I made friends, went to Crazy Horse for the 2nd time, the weather was great, the supper at mega practice was good, and had a great hotel. We also got two movies, Alvin and the Chipmunks the squekuel and The Blind Side. It was a long drive from Fremont,NE to Rapid City,SD. Thats my Mt.Rushmore. Thanks Steve and Jordan! Matt Jessen not Zach.

  49. The best part for me, besides being part of the mega-practice thunder, was getting to know our Warren buddies that much better. 48+ hours of travel over 6 fun-filled days will do that. And, also to meet so many new friends at the mega-practice. Even learned a new trick for not losing my sticks when my hands are cold and dry. Ask me sometime.
