Time for Thanks

Last night, after a GREAT practice in Columbia, MO we were packing the car and Jordan said LOOK UP.  It was night, and at first I didn't see them, but then I heard them...an entire flock of snow geese calling to each other as they flew through the dark, heading north, on their way home.  Most of you know my love of all of our avian (feathered) friends...and this really made my day...as it was one more sign that spring is almost here (Columbia practice started with robins outside the church, another good sign).  It was one of those little things that God gives to us everyday that we need to be thankful for...a reminder of how awesome and wonderful ALL of God's creation really is.

Therefore, and since it has been quite awhile since I have had a chance to post a thought-provoking question for you all to work on...here it is...what is ONE thing that you are VERY thankful to God for in the last FIVE days...something that truly made you smile...outside and in.  Something that reminded YOU that God gave us all an amazing world and we need to always remember to give our thanks and prayers back to God for all of the wonder around us.

Have at it!!  More from me probably NOT until Sat, Sun or Mon morning, all depending!!

  4. I'd have to say I am really thankful for God putting SR in my life. These past few days I have been able to talk to and get to know several of the members, and it made me thankful that I have the oppurtunity to meet these people, and be a part of such a great, interconnected group.

  6. For me, it would be on Monday morning when I woke up and thanked God for the fine weather and for my health, that I was able to go to Iowa City over the weekend and see my son, Alex. We didn't have alot of time together but I tried to make the most of it and got to see him perform at some SR shows. I have not seen Alex drum nor a show since, I think it was the State Fair, and I realized how much I have missed it. Watching an SR show just uplifts my spirits and my attitude on life so much and makes me feel closer to God.

  7. Last 5 days...that is kind of hard. It could be the beautiful sunrise I saw the other morning (before the sun blinded me) or the flock of wild turkeys I saw on my drive in the other morning.

I had an experience in which I was finishing some special time with God and I noticed 3 eagles flying over head--Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. God puts the reminder there whenever HE knows I need to see it. The eagle is a very strong reminder, but God seems to sense I need a reminder of this and will show me in HIS own way. Whether it is an eagle or not is another story.

  10. I'm glad you asked this question because I've had some thought provoking moments lately and was looking for an opportunity to share. I was driving home the other night and was thinking about how amazing it is that God created everything and how interconnected everything is. For some reason, sound and light popped in my head. Isn't it interesting that there are sound waves and light waves? Are they on the same "plane" so to speak? So, does light actually make a sound and does sound make light? We may not be able to hear it or see it but that doesn't mean that it doesn't, right?

Also, it's been EXTREMELY foggy lately. Which has created an exhausted Jenn. But the sun came out today and it's amazing the affects it has on a person.

I'm thankful for a God that is so creative!!! He is amazing!!!

  11. Steve - I love this question! And haha I really like the signs of spring! Can't wait till summer! At least partly :)

Jenn - That is such a good thought or question! Now I'm thinkin about the whole sound&light thing too!

My thankful moment came on the first so on Monday because I realized that I've been in the US for 6 months now and just how lucky I've been to get to come all the way here and have had the opportunities to try out so many things like SR, something I'd never try in Finland 'cause I'd be too scared! Or lacrosse that basically doesn't exist in Finland. So I'm greatful that every country is different with their cultures and people and it's just all great and it would be so boring if everyone&everything was the same so the differences in everyone is what makes world great though some people should learn to accept and appreciate the differences. I'd have sooo much more to say about this but I dont want to bore anyone haha :))

  12. For me I've been very thankful for my children this week. I've been blessed with 2 beautiful girls that have each been struggling with their own issues.

Katrina, my oldest, has been very sick since Friday. She caught the crud going around, but whenever she gets sick her asthma kicks in. Took her to the doctor on Monday, but even with all the meds she is on, she hasn't gotten any better yet. (infact she's worse than when we went to the dr.) It gets scarry when she has so much trouble just trying to breathe. It makes me thankful for just having her here.

Rachel, my youngest and SR drummer, has been having some issues with friends lately. Some people at school have been saying some hurtful things. She's also been put in the middle of friends that are fighting. Also, her closest friend has Rachel worried by some dangerous things she's been doing to reach out for help. These emotions tear her apart, but I'm very greatful that she'll talk to me.

So basically, it has reminded me that every day I have with my children is very special to me.

  13. Well since we have been enveloped in fog for the past six days, I decided that this morning I was going to make the best out of the weather and wear spring clothes to school to rebel against the dreary surroundings we have been dealing with.

As the girls and I were driving to school in the fog, all of a sudden the sun shone all around us and God made the most beautiful picture just for us! My girls were even speechless and for just a few minutes we got to feel and see the warmth that God surrounds us with even when we can't "see" it! It was absolutely breath-taking.

We had our own little glimpse of heaven here on earth....praise you God for all the little things that we take for granted!

  14. I'm thankful for teachers who treat your kids like their own. One of my son's high school teachers is always looking out for his best interest, being a friend and giving him that little nudge of encouragement. Yes, parents want to do this too, but when he needs someone else to talk to, he goes to her. For me it speaks volumes of her character. It made me sad to hear after going to a summer SR show to surprise my son, she was filing for a divorce. We didn't find out till school started. She told my son that our show helped to make her final decision. After meeting with her on Monday and giving her a HUGE hug, I know she made the right decision. She even looks happier than I have ever seen her. My son is not as worried about her and her children like he was at the beginning of school. I am thankful for this teacher in my son's life and in mine.

  16. I know that this sounds imiture and silly but the thing that I am thankful most for right now is that I am still playing basketball even though the JV season is done. I love that our coach let me play with the varisity team and it gives me hope for tomarrow.

  17. Jenn--the sound and light waves thing is really interesting! I have heard of a certain condition called synesthesia, where a person's senses actually get mixed up. Some can see sounds, hear what they taste, or even taste what they hear! Anyway, your comment made me think of this because scientists aren't totally sure how it happens. Maybe it could involve your sound/light idea!

  18. I'm thankful for the beautiful music my daughter plays on her viola, especially since that's my instrument too. It's such a treat to share that with her. She is a sixth grader and the 6th graders from 4 schools performed last night with one of the high school orchestras and they sounded great!

  19. Annetta, Wow thats a great story. Thanks for putting it on here. It's unbelieveable how what SR does with 2 peices of wood and a set of drums can do for someone's life. I know I have seen some amazing things after i got done with a show. It's makes me miss SR just a little bit more to think about the people who i have helped impact just a little bit, but really it's really worth the hard work when you see what we do change someone else's life.

  20. Oh, this is easy. My youngest has been home this past week on a break from college. He goes to school in Milwaukee (4-1/2 hours away), so this is the first I'd seen him since Christmas break. Matt has a great sense of humor and it always amazes me how much fun he has with life. So, I've been thankful for his company this past week and for brightening my life.

  21. Hmm... Maybe when my legs stopped hurting after our workout at practice last week? Ha ha no.

In all seriousness, I'm thankful that my mom still has a job this week, and that I live comfortably. Many of my classmates are really struggling right now. I know I'm lucky to be living as I am.

  23. David,
Very interesting about the sound/taste/hear/see phenomenon.....I find that quite fascinating. It makes me wonder if what is why I have to close my eyes and visualize a certain pattern to the music in order to get it....I certainly think our brains work in many different ways to get the same result.

It is just the same way that I play the piano, if I look at my hands when I play, the visual of it breaks the moment and I lose the feel of the piece. In order to become connected to the music there is some sort of something going on with the senses.

David...you are good for the soul...you make us all think and sometimes laugh, if we get your jokes!!!!!!

  24. Hmm... Well ok, Im thankful that God gave me a sign on what I want to do in my life i guess. This week my Lifeskills teacher gave us a project and its Jobshadowing. It has to be something we want to do when we grow up, and of course my mind starts going and I srart freaking out bcuz I had Noooooo clue what I wanted to do. So I prayed about it every night, its been bothering me that I have noo clue what I want to do. So then randomly the word "councillor" poped in my head while I was sitting in study hall. I didnt understand why. Ever since then, everyday someone has talked about it. And Then I was like wow... I want to be a councillor. Thats what I always wanted to do. I never realized it. People always came to me to talk about there problems and whats wrong and I love that! I love being able to help people, to have the right words to say even if I have no clue where they came from. I believe God was there for every part of it! I just think thats the coolest thing ever. This week was an awesome week. So I am sooo very thankful for that. Love God soo very much!! :)

  29. Snow is starting to melt in the backyard and yesterday, when the little dog went flying off the deck as usual to patrol his domain, he landed in a puddle that wasn't there the day before. Oh...the LOOK on his face. Priceless. I'm thankful for spring and the reminder that Christ came to bring us life ABUNDANT.

  30. Hmmmm...Well I'm must say that since I have the "Baby Think It Over" baby simulator all weekend end I am extremly thankful for my parents. I really hope I wasn't as much trouble for them when I was born as this thing is for me! It is a blessing to have such wonderful parents.
I also must say the rain!!! Yes rain, not snow. It is a true sign to me that spring is coming and my old car is finally seeing daylight again after being under feet of snow.

  32. This is a great question! I would have to say that- in the last five days- I have been thankful for... mustard seeds!! Okay, so it's kind of a long story, but I'll keep it as concise as I can.

In the last few weeks, we've been been focusing on growing our church - since we've dwindled down to very small numbers in the last few years. So the campaign is centered around the parable of the mustard seed, and I've been in charge of putting together small things to pass out after church each week to reming people of what God can do with one small mustard seed. So the first week I put together small packets of mustard seeds for people. The second week, I was SUPPOSED to do small packets of soil. But when I went to put them together, I couldn't remember if I was supposed to put more mustard seeds in the soil or not! So I went ahead and did so just in case. Well, turns out I got it wrong. That Wednesday, I was at church again for a prayer meeting (again, for this same growing campaign), and the pastor's wife took out her pack of soil and showed everyone and GUESS WHAT!?? Some of the seeds were growing!! Well, no one had been expecting that because I'd messed up. But they grew regardless, after only a few days and some good soil.

So... that's my long-winded story. I guess what I'm getting at is that I'm thankful for the signs of life God gives us every day, expected or not. And that He can turn a mistake into a blessing!

  33. Jovanna,

What a great story that started from a little "seed" of a first sentence you dropped above :) It is amazing how God reminds of the greatest of His world in the smallest things each and every day (if we choose to keep our eyes, ears, and heart open that is!)

  34. Jovanna-That's really cool! I just did a lesson on that story at youth group.
