Now that I have seen LOTS of people doing the Tick Tock beat, and some doing the Sheila E fill (if you have not learned that yet, you will at the next practice with me, and/or from Drum Stick)...I want to know how fast each of you are with both of them...it is easier to talk about Tick Tock beat in terms of beat accelerator songs...so go ahead and comment on how fast you are...and how you worked on it (since very few of have 2 sets of drums at home)...and if you are getting really fast (say up to song 10 on Beat Accelerator 2009)...then give advice to those who may be struggling with it. For example, David and Drew send me a video of David working on it...which we will post on Drum Stick here very soon...and he had a great method to work on the beat (and I must say...he is VERY fast).
Since the limiting factor of getting the new song into the show will be:
a. The Tick Tock beat needs to sound clean and tight
b. The Sheila E fill needs to sound clean, tight, and dynamic
c. The Sheila E fill needs to succeed WHILE doing the "gallop" middle section of the song...
I'm at about 14 on the 2009 beat accelerator with the tick tock beat. I am one of the fortunate people that are able to have multiple drums to work on at with at home, but I also work at home on my floor. I set stack two books together to make the two left hand cowbells and then put another book for the right hand cowbell. Make sure that they are books that you are okay with hitting and possibly denting (I have put my Harry Potter books through a lot but they are still living). As for the Sheila E fill now that Steve showed MiKayla and I at practice a couple days ago it has been bugging me. I'm pretty sure I'm getting it down. My band teacher yelled at me cause I was doing it with my hands on a stand when I should have been doing band stuff (oops!) I start doing it slow and just gradually speed it up. I'm doing okay, but nowhere near the speed that Steve wants it to be especially with the gallop part (accident prone me *cough cough*)
ReplyDeleteUmm....so I don't know what number I'm at....I'm NEVER home long enough to get any practice in...but Steve....I was faster at the Tick Tock Beat at our in between practice!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have to learn that beat in 20 days(3 weeks)(at MTR) dont I?? Mur im going to die!!!! Im SOOOO far behind!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell The Tick Tock beat.. (rocks my world soo very much) Im on 16ish 17. I can do 17 but its alittle to fast yet but I have 16 down. It's goofy lol :)
ReplyDeleteand the Sheila E fill... I must say, that fill is fun! The day after I had practic with Steve and Jordan I played for 3 hours and only on that fill. I got it all the way up to track 22! I was very excited! I couldn't believe it. That was my first beat I have every gotten all to 22. I played track 22 like 3 times, then I wanted it to be faster. So I took like a 3 min. break so I could get the feeling in my wrists again ;)and while i was taking my break I was listening to The Academy Is (I Love them <3) and I started doing the fill to that song, "About A Girl". Man... It's fast, but its soooooooooo much fun!! I finally have it in that song. Took me a few days to get it. I was soo pumped after that! :D
Dee-I finally recognize who The Academy Is is!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood job guys! Keep it up!
Kelli- lol I lovee them!! ^_^ just saying :)
ReplyDeleteUh... What's the Sheila E fill? Crud. I need to carve out some time to watch the videos....
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what beat accelerator I'm on for the Tick Tock beat, but I can do it on the table at school fast enough to impress my friend (She was REALLY impressed). I stack textbooks(I have plenty) on the table to be the cowbells. The only downside is that when I do it at school I tend to use my hands and then it hurts and I have to stop.
I am curious at what the shela E fill is and I am not quite as fast a David but Im getting better its hard to practice I have my mind on Basketball sense we are going to state.
ReplyDeleteI can play it pretty well @ 18 on the 2009 beat accelerators, and @ 19-20 for a short time (I need to work on my endurance, I run out of steam way too quickly..) At my house, I usually practice in the basement w/ 4 buckets acting as the drums, w/ 3 varying size pans above them on a chair, and a pizza pan for the cymbal (although I did use a clothes hamper/chair combination once; it sounds pretty good too :)--kelli's right, they do tend to get dented and beaten up...
ReplyDeleteFor anyone struggling, on the faster songs I start w/ my right hand alone making the T-pattern, throw my left hand in on the low bell, then start alternating. Hope that helps!
Sheila E fill??--sounds exciting; can't wait to learn it! (really need to check Drum Stick more..)
Drew and David-I'm sure Steve will show you on Monday, be ready! lol ;)I don't recal it being on Drum Stick yet though. It is really simple when done slow, but it needs to go insanely fast. (Mind you insanely fast in my mind can be way different then yours!)
ReplyDeleteNope Kelli, insanely fast IS insanely fast :) That is what makes it so FUN!!
ReplyDeleteWell Steve, you never know some people think that insanely fast is slower than what you would say! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh and it is fun! I have kind of become addicted to working on it when I'm not doing anything with my hands!
ReplyDeleteI practiced beats on the bus seat on my way to our archery tournament today!
ReplyDelete...And then my friend got annoyed so I had to stop.
Still, I can't wait to learn the new Sheila E fill!
WOW!!! i dont get on for a week cause im grounded and i miss all the fun!! haha
ReplyDeletebut i am maybe at 8 or 9 on the tick tock beat...but the Sheila E beat i havent even gotten it down slow yet haha oh well...ill keep trying. :
I just found another way to do the Tick Tock beat. Use furniture to stand in for the extra drums. I have a plastic lamp with lots of movable arms so I have two of those being my neighbors cowbell and I put my cymbal where their drum should be and lowered it to be level with my drums. It helps since I need something to hit, even if it makes the wrong sound.
ReplyDeleteSonja- wow thats really creative haha :)
ReplyDeleteColleen- Thanks. It's amazing what one can come up with when one is given unexpected free time.
ReplyDeleteSonja- haha good point :)
ReplyDeleteDoing the Tick Tock beat on the tables at school is fun too, but my teachers and friends get annoyed.
ReplyDelete;)
Sonja- oh yea i do that too...my friends tell me all the time to stop and i don't even know half the time :)
ReplyDeleteTo everyone who drums on tables incessantly at school-
ReplyDeleteOne of my classmates, who, since December, has listened to me rock out on the table every day in Spanish class, found something amazing:
DRUMSTICK PENCILS! Seriously, they come in pairs. They are pencils shaped to look just like a pair of drumsticks!
Sonja- That is so COOL!!! tell your friend that he/she did good on finding them. man i wish i had a pair! my friends freak out all the time when i drum at lunch and all my other classes ( and yes that too includes Spanish :))
ReplyDeleteColleen- Spanish seems like a good place to drum on the table for some reason.... :)
ReplyDeleteI want some for my b-day next week but they're out of stock for now. :(
Sonja- i know i had a test today amd i started drumming randomly and everyone looked at me. it was funny but i didnt care cause i was having fun :) and i am very sorry to hear that the pencil drumsticks arent in stock :( they will come in soon though :)
