BLOG question of the day

Today's question for you all is deeper than I have done so far...and it will be repeated several times, in different ways, once we get everyone in the country logged on here.  But, I am ready to try this out...so here goes...

I am planning many changes to "my" version of the SR show this year...one of them is to start to include many more of your personal journeys in SR in place of just "one" story of the day...because all members of SR change in many ways, and I think it is time for the audience to know this.  Jovanna, you started this, just so you know!  When you emailed about how you have changed since you joined SR...which has been noticeable to me...but unknown to the audience...I realized that we are missing a much bigger picture.  I think the audience deserves to know ALL the reasons we play drums...why you are all in SR...and how your lives are changing by doing this musical ministry.

SO...my question of the day for you all is:

Why do you play the drums in SR?  Especially since many of the drum parts keep getting harder?

There ya all go...have fun with it!

  1. I found a place to belong, many new friends (which continues to happen every single day!), a support system, and I love to see how happy trying new things makes not only the audience members but also the kids in the group. The last show I was at (a Salvation Army Adult Daycare) we had guest drummers who were much older and had many different disorders but the looks on their faces when they were playing I will never forget, even if they do. That is one of the best things I have ever expierenced in the group so far. I really got to see our message in their eyes. It has really enforced what I want to go into and major in during college.
Not only have I made connections with members and their families, but I have also made lasting connections with different audience members (including those at the daycare). Some have helped me with my college search and some told me to keep in touch for after college opportunities.
Overall, I continue with SR because I believe this is where God wants me right now. Sure there have been a few rough spots, but he has givin me so many more amazing times and expierences and I haven't felt a need to leave. As long as he wants me here I plan to stay.
There is so much more I could continue to write, but I don't have enough time. This is a general overview. I am excited to see what other people will say.

  2. Eh-heh... ummm.... er... yeah. You need to be careful about the snowball effect around steve, I guess.

So why do I keep drumming with SR?? Well, in the beginning it was really hard for me because I am so uncoordinated. Or was.. past tense, maybe. I must admit, I wasn't confident that I could actually pull it off and I almost quit. Not almost, you know, but I wondered if I would ever be able to drum well. The biggest thing that kept me in SR was the fact that we are faith-based. If we weren't, I would not have been motivated to keep going in that first year. Now that the drum parts are getting harder, I just think, 'bring it!'

  3. Jovanna I would have never guessed you were "uncoordinated" in the beginning! You do so well, and I'm glad you stuck with it!

  4. Well I play them for many reasons. At first I figured thst I already knew how to playe 3 instruments, so i thought hmm.. lets make it 4 and its the drums! My sister sarah joined and she would come over and tell me all about it. I wanted to join soo bad, so I did! Then I loved it. I really didnt know what i was doing and it was kind of scary at the same time. Im a really shy person especially when its like face to face conversation, but this year i like talk a lot lol. ^_^ probably becaause im not afraid to be me, and talking to new peolpe is A LOT of fun! I always find something in common and I get all excited about it! Being a Drummer in SR means everything to me. I love it! I love everything about it, and learning new, harder things is amazing. It challenges me to keep doing it. Then when i get it, I want to see how fast I can make it. Also when you make it challenging then you have the Steps of Success to succeed at them. So thats why im a drummer! :) Theres a lot more reasons but im going to wait 4 now.^_^

  5. Still uncoordinated. You should see me 'trying' to do turbo jam... I'm doing my own thing half the time... yeah...

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dee I was really shy as well! Jovanna I'm sure you do just fine!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Trust me, Jovanna is still uncoordinated !! HAHA!! Just kidding you, but you know me, I could not resist!

Great job you guys...I am loving watching you get to know each other :)

  8. back when i first started out in sheltered reality about 3 years ago, our site had a show in probably the samllest town of wisconsin in poy sippi. we had 2 shows that days and after the last show i had a lady come up say the usual stuff that most of us get after the show like good job, you played great! but what she said after that really hit home, she said, "Something horrible happened to you when you were younger. (which is true) You are going to change so many people's lives through this band! Just through your story during the show really lifted my heart and now i finally believe that i have the power to succeed!" thats what i live for everyday! when im at a show im full of adrenaline and excitement, and seeing the audience react to "Surrender" or the stories we tell keeps me motivated at every show i go to! I LOVE SHELTERED REALITY!

  9. Okay, so I remebered seeing SR and at first I was like this is weird...not gonna lie...but then I got so into it and was dancing and signing..I deffently know that I looked like a freak in the audience, but it didn't really matter. In my head I was like I wish I could do that, but never thought I would or even try to! Then the steps to success came, and thats what got me hooked! Personally I knew of a person who really needed to hear them! So I liked the message and the story so much, I went and got my parents and made them watch a show, when they said I could join I was so happy! The steps are what really mean something to me! sometimes it is just so hard to follow them, but thats when its the most rewarding. following the steps to success has helped me be who I want to be so much! It has help me in all parts of life...but sr has helped me with my family the most! I have learned to actually care and try to talk to my parents and that is the best gift that I could ever get from anything! sure we still fight constanly, but its much better now that I got the confidence to actually try!

Jovanna- your kidding me you uncordinated no way! I don't believe this!

  10. Ben,

I had forgotten that story from that show! Thanks for posting it here so that we don't lose it in SR! Yet, another reason for this...over the years I wonder how many other great stories we have lost, forgotten, or never knew? Time to change that has arrived!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. awsome steve, before that show i have always tried to tackle how to take control of the situation between my mom and i, after that show i realized that she was the boost i needed to realize that sheltered reality is going to turn my life around!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow Ben!
That story is really moving...I was tearing up! its not hard for me! but I think I somewhat understand what your talking about when you dont have much of a connection with or a unhealthy relationship with someone its not easy to fix things, and sometimes it takes something powerful to give you the courage to do something like that. I dont know if we are thinking the same way, but thats just how I felt reading that! it was very inspirational

  13. Tonia- believe it.

Steve- your head's cut off. In the picture.

  14. Jovanna,

Yeah, I noticed that...I just used the same as my Facebook picture...so I guess for now, I will leave it as is :) Anyone with hints on how to fix that, let me know :)

  15. You can edit your photo. There's a little box you can slide around and make bigger or smaller. I'd try that so that we can see more than just your nametag.

  16. I started SR mainly because I wanted to get into something to get me out of the house a little more often and i wanted something to do with a musicle instrument mostly drums and when I say warren in the october concert like what was it two years ago by now I knew this is what i wanted to do. P.S ignore the spelling errors I had a lock in at my church all last night and so I'm running on like only an hours worth of sleep lol.

    ReplyDelete
  17. oh yeah i was also looking for a way to meet new friends in other places then just volunteering at the Toledo Zoo.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I got hooked when I saw SR play in Toledo in
July. I have always had a desire to play drums but thought it would be stupid to just buy a set and play by myself.(Especially since I have no idea what I am doing.) This is soooo much fun!! I really enjoy my group and love the whole idea behind SR. As far as drumming-the harder it gets the more I laugh. What a way to relieve stress. SR is pure enjoyment.

  19. Hey Dee and kjlair44 I'm also shy I would rather be the invisable guy in the corner or the fly on the wall When i did my first SR concert with warren I was actuilly really nervouse about messing up even thought there were only like five to ten people watching us I still don't walk up to people i don't know and start talkng I kind of ease drop and try to get to know them a liitle bit that way first sorry warren but thats how I started talking to some of you guys lol.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I started playing the drums back when very few adults were in the group. I was asked to lead a show in Spencer, Iowa and I decided if I was going to lead the show, I was going to play the drums! So, I took a crash course from Steve on how to play the show songs. And I had some very good experienced drummers with me at that show :)
The experts say playing an instrument is a good way to relieve stress, and I agree! I already play the piano, so playing the drums seemed like a natural progression for me.
And speaking of being shy, I was VERY bashful as a kid, so leading shows is really stepping outside of my comfort zone. It gets a little easier each time, so keep at it.
Doesn't hurt that it can be a lot of fun, too.

  21. Devin-Yea thats how i usted 2 be. People had 2 come up to me and stat talking then I was like Hey! lol I changed like the ending of last year. I randomly walked up 2 this girl Brit and now we r bestfriends!. Indeed its scary at first but when you talk and stuff u never know, that person might be your new bestfriend! Plus its fun 2 meet new people! :) And Devin you did awesome at ur first show! i remember that! I think every 1 was alittle nervouse. But it was awesome hanging out and playing with you guys!! :D

  22. I saw SR in October. The very first song, Cuba Libre, caught my eye and I had this yearning to be part of it. I was horrified when Steve started talking about going up there and actually drumming. I didn't think I could do it. But as the show went on, and we did the steps to success, I got a little bit more interested, and a bit more willing to try something. Then, at the last guest drum song, Steve said that if we hadn't gone up we should raise our hands. I did, halfheartedly. Alec saw me and I got to go onstage. Let me tell you something real quick. I live for the stage. My life revolves around theater. I had a blast drumming (and totally messing up, which I still do, but it's kinda fun) and that gave me the push I needed to go sign up.

I've always been a really shy person. I struggled with learning disabilities, which I have overcome. I was bullied mercilessly for being different. When I started junior high, I was so terrified and still broken from my experiences.

I found solace and friendship in music and performance. I still do. Now that I have SR in my life, it's kind of like a safe haven. People are friendly and kind. I feel accepted. I don't need to worry about my drama with friends or the heap of homework or the fact that my director for theater plays favorites. I can just drum and mess up and meet people.

If anyone has questions about my learning disabilities you can ask me on Facebook (Send a note or something). I'm happy to answer questions. You can also ask me here, I guess.

Jovanna- It's hard to believe you were ever uncoordinated. I've been following you for the last two practices since I don't know the songs very well.

  23. It is so interesting to look back aty life, it is hard to think about pre-SR. I have no idea where I would be, what I would be like, or if I would still be here had I not joined. Plus if you meet me today you would never guess I was shy at one point in my life!
Steve if you can't figure out your picture I can help you on the 23 or 24.

  24. I personally have never been shy. Even not being shy I still understand what Sonja was talking about, I feel that people that are in SR are different than people at school! At SR it is easier to be yourself and trust those around you. The best part is no one judges. Another thing that I have realized is my school is extremely clicky and there are like no clicks at SR, I like that! Its like what I have been trying to do at my school for years! i float which means I am friends with people from almost every click because to me clicks should not matter, SR is where clicks do not matter :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree very much! When i go to an SR Prac everyone welcomes u,every1 talks to each other and i love that. With school I always think...whos talking about me now? With school people love to bring people down it seems like and or start stuff that isnt true. I dont get that. But idk if thats just my school but its annoying. It seems like no one can be happy. SR is my escape from all that drama. Its my amazing family that i never want 2 lose. Love it! :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sonja-
So much of your story resonates deeply within me. It's almost as though I could have written much of that myself. So many people are saying that they are shy or were shy before SR. I still am shy, but not to the extent that I was before SR. It seems as though SR has this... I don't know, kind of a pull toward people who need that extra shove, that extra helping hand, that extra place to 'fit in'.

I graduate this year with 740 other people whom I barely know. And I won't lie. I'm happy to be moving on. Because Tonia is right. High school and even middle school was so clicky. SR is the only place I know where differences and what click you belong to or don't belong to are dropped at the door.

    And thanks for the compliment.

One more thought. It seems to me that a lot of people have overcome many things because of having the chance to be part of SR (such as shyness). I truly believe this is partly because being part of this awesome group boostes every one's self-esteem. How does that happen? You can't get self-esteem from a pat on the back or some one else telling you you should be proud of yourself. Self-esteem comes from taking on a challenge - doing something that's more difficult than what you think you can do - and succeeding at it.

Thanks Steve, and keep pushing us to new heights, even when we don't think we're capable.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jovanna- You're welcome. Also. I agree. My high school is smaller than most, 400 kids K-12, but we still have cliques. It's better at our school, but not by much. I can't just go and sit at a random table. I'd probably get yelled at and sworn at. It's frustrating. No one ever goes out of their way to help a newbie, or to make a new friend. We've boxed ourselves in and confined ourselves. Even within my group of friends we have formed cliques within cliques. It's disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What makes me really mad is when you try and take a friend out of their clique and help them meet new people, but they won't even try cause its not there clique. My grade has about 550 people, and most people hang around with the same 30 people thats 520 people that your not even giving a chance to meet! I think i would go crazy stuck inside just one group.. some people say that everyone knows me or I know everyone, but its so not true there are so many people that I could still meet, but they are off on there own little world. I hope there is a change in college life!

  29. I started SR about 1 year ago!i found out about Sr at the minnesota state fai.at first my mom wanted to watch you all and i was like no i want to go get the free stuff.i was then soon after we sat down calless up to the stage with my brother to guest drum.i was drumming with Christina from the inneapolis sit.Later steve choose lucas to pick on and lucas won a cd.then we went to sign up listened to the cd went to practice bought drums and loved SR ever since!everybody keep up the good work and to all of you new drummers keep up with the good work and i hope to meet everybody someday! My favorite part about sr is changeing the lives of many people and meeting new friends that i can talk to and keep forever!!!!

  30. We(the toledo site) got our new sounds system a month or two ago and just got our belt packs a few weeks ago so YAY!!! lol but if warren still wants to play with us when they can we would all like that you guys at warren our lie cousins to us now

    ReplyDelete
  31. OK - so I don't play the drums - but reading what all of you are writing is the reason I stick with SR! It is such a privlege to watch people like Jovanna and Tonia grow in confidence and ability through our SR Site - and Sonja, I was just thinking after practice yesterday that I don't really know you very well yet - I think I have missed out on learning about an awesome person, so thanks for sharing your story here!

And I think Steve is right - there must be a reason all of you (including my own VERY busy daughter) persevere with SR even when it is hard work. I am sure that God brought you all to SR for a reason - whether it is to gain confidence to be the person God made you to be, or to meet new friends, or whatever - and I am enjoying the journey with each of you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. And I must say...reading through this brought many tears and many smiles to me face...BLESS you all for sharing with EACH other on here. This is going to exceed my wildest expectations!!

  33. Steve,
I really like how you made this blog. I really enjoy reading it and commenting and getting to know others!
    Thanks!

  34. I agree with Tonia. I log on every day no matter what.

Today I told my best friend that I was sick of how she shuts out some of the people we hang out with and how she is acting so clicky and exclusive. She got really mad and ignored me all day. She left a note on my seat in Bio. It wasn't very nice. I'm so upset right now, but I'm glad I spoke up for my friends.

  35. lol so do i! everyday im on! i set it has my home page :D I love seeing what people have 2 say. :)

But Sonja the question is are you happy what you did? If you think about it if she was really friend she would talk about it with u. ya know? But maybe you telling her this will make her think. Maybe when shes in bed maybe she'll be like wow Sonjas right.! But if shes a true friend she would come back to you. If not then shes just lost an awesome friend. and you know who that is... thats you!! I know I dont know you very well but I can tell that your an awesome person! and... im here for you no matter what!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dee- Thanks so much! I'm going to try and bring it up with her in person tomorrow. I think SR has somehow caused me to grow an actual spine. Awesome.

Maybe when I'm able to do shows I'll come visit your site. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sonja- yup no problem! Any time! im here for you! Just breathe and think positive everthing will be fine. :) Im proud of you though. I would never be able to do that i dont think. I know I would want to but i dont think I could do it. So you rock! LoL :D

That Would be SOOOO AWESOME!! :D woot!!^_^ I would be soo excited if you did! lol.

  38. Dee- I'm just randomly curious, how long have you been doing SR?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sonja- ha its cool I get it a lot lol. plus imma very random so its cool. but ive been in sr for about 3years maybe 3 1/2. if not 3 1/2 then its soon. lol. :D

  40. Dee- Wow. That's a while. I just joined officially in December. I wish I could have joined sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sonja- Really!! thats soo exciting!! lol! Do you love it so far?? :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dee- Yeah. It's like the best thing I've ever done in my life. My teachers are getting annoyed with my drumming on the table all the time though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sonja- I was just about 2 say that! LoL Yea its amazing like just wait it will get better and better Steve and Jordan are awesome then you got your SR family and its just a big bundle of love!! lol. :D and dont worry i always drum on my desk. lol. sometimes i dont even know that im doing it. lol. :D

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dee- I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who drums on the desks. Today my Spanish teacher told me to stop, so I switched to air drumming, but she didn't like that either. Also my classmates were looking at me like I was psycho. It was great.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LoL! I think that just made my day. lol .:D thats kinda funny because im in German and im a german 2 and my teacher loves to pick on me so i love it but anyways lol we were takin our exam thing thats hard but i think i did good on it but we were sitting there and im drumming on the desk while looking at my test and my german teacher says "Susi(btw thsts my german name dont really like it but oh well lol ) can u b alittle quieter" and i was completely dumbfounded it was awesome. lol. then like my face was all red because i had no clue what he was talking about lol. ^_^ im smart lol. my friend put her and on top of mine and i was like ohh... srry. not gonna lie i kept on laughing about it. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  46. That totally made me laugh. My friend will wait until I miss a beat and THEN stop me. She won't stop me if I'm getting it right, but once there's a stray beat she'll be right there and grab my hand. It's funny because she knows the least about music of anybody I know.

    ReplyDelete
  47. LoL! that funny!!! its funny how people can do thats.its crazy. lol.:)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think next time I see her I'm going to tell her she has an instinct for rhythm and suggest she play an instrument. She's going to give me a death glare. I have to log off. My parents are getting annoyed at me for being online so long. Talk to you soon!

  49. lol :D nice! lol. and ok ttyl.:)

  50. So I don't have Internet acces much for two days and have a lot of catch up to do! Going to the school thing even with a senior class of 46 there are so many "groups" and yet you are expected to be in one. People don't seem to understand that you can be interested in more than one thing and have friends from all walks of life. I admit I'm also guilty of drumming on my desk. Although when I started out I did it with my feet not my hands...Erika I'm glad you two found the group! You are amazing people. Dee and Sonja I feel like I know you so much more now! It truly I amazing to see what these questions of the day can spur in people.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well I'm not a drummer, but have been involved with the group with my daughter for 3 years now, 1 1/2 years leading shows. When I first got involved, it was simply something for my daughter to do that she enjoyed, so I supported her. But as time went by, I realized that this group was something way more than social. The way it touches peoples lives is an amazing thing to be a part of. As I got more involved with SR and started leading shows, it wasn't all fun. It seems that no matter what, what we are taught about how to treat people, there are always people that try to bring you down. Down to the point of really just wanting too take my daughter and run. So why do I stay? Because by using the Steps to success, I found out that I could get through these bad times, and use them to make myself stronger. Also, the amazing friends that I haver made in this group help me get through anything that life can throw at me. The kids I work with are wonderful too. Such a great extension of my own family. I really don't know what I would do without this. So as long as this is the plan that God has for me, and as long as I can help make a difference, I will be around for the long haul.

  52. i'm actuilly starting to get quite nervuse because my group is going to have their first school show in a month or two and i think it wiil be a lot different then an ordinary show.

I also LOVE how you use the steps to success so often and point them out...I used to do this too, but I lost the inspiration. I think your going to bring it back to me!

Sonja- I love how your new and so interested, and wanting to learn! Its so cool! I think that your doing great! i also wanna wish you luck with your friend, your such a wonderful person and if she does not understand this its her loss, she should be lucky to have someone as great as you in their life!

Kelli- It shocks me that even a school as small as yours has cliques! I always thought that everyone would just get along! wow was I dreaming!

  63. well some of the many reason's that i play drums are because i like to play and it is a good thing to do to keep me on my toes. the moves may get harder but i keep getting better as i/we go along. Never give up, and take a chance. i remember that and it keeps me going. even in my daily life i remember that.

  65. Dee - You were right on 3.5 years. You joined in July of 2006. The Warren site started in April of 2006. Hopefully we'll make it to Mt. Rush again this year. Maybe making the 25 hour trip with the Toledo site! :o)

Long story short...I'm not a drummer, but my son, Chris, is. I heard about SR in 2005. Drove my son an hour away to meet with Steve. Unfortuately the site only lasted about 6 months. Warren site (where we live) started in 2006. In 2007 I took over as "the e-mail coordinator" which was really the site leader. Chris graduated in 2008 and is no longer a member, but I can't leave my SR family. I've seen a wonderful change in my son and my other 'kids'. It's really hard to put into words for me, but SR is just something that is needed in my life. And I love to see all the changes it is making in my 'kids' and the world.

  66. Tricia- Wow its really been 3.5 years... How exciting!!!! :D Man i hope we can go this year that would be amazing! We would have soooo much fun goin with Toledo! LoL :D

  67. Wow ok well Whne I joined SR it was cause I had 3 cousins in SR. I didnt realise two and a half years ago I would totally fall in love with the group and not be able to leave very easy.

When I joined I had a lot of issues. I could keep any friends more then a few months. The friends i had before i joined left me and wanted nothing to do with me. See the thing is I was having major issues with confidence and try so hard to not go to a pill bottle to deal with my stress. Well then i met this girl named Janey who had had issue similar issue to mine. She went to Steve and pretty soon the drums were my stress reliever and not pills.

I started making more and more friends. I had 2-3 friends in school other then that it was only people in SR. Which i was ok with. Then I found out i was going to have to say bye to all my new and wonderful friends to move across the country. I was crushed. I couldnt even say the words moving and Georgia in the same sentence without starting to cry. Well a few weeks after I found out a girl joined my site. I didn't realise then that that girl would become like a sister to me. The number of days got more and more stressful. I didnt want to go! I didnt want to loose everything i had spent 2 years trying to get back. Well then it was June 7th...The day before I was going to move away from EVERYTHING also the day of my last show and practice and my last day of SR for while...It was soooo hard to say the word bye.

Now I'm in georgia 1200 miles from my friends, family,my church, SR. If i could would I get it all back tomorrow and pretend I never moved...Oh yea...but i can't. I miss SR and my friends like CRAZY!!!!! I miss my 2nd family!!!! SR gave me a place to belong..a place where no matter what problem i had i could take it to the drums and by time im done I forgot what the problem is. SR gave me my life back. SR saved my life. SR gave my confidence that if I belived in myself and never gave up and took and chance and belived in GOD I could do anything. I love SR. It was my life before I moved. Now its the thing that taught me I can do anything. So in a way SR is my future.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Amanda, I have heard myself and Steve tell your story so many times, but you just made me cry! I heard you tell it once, but I didn't know you really until after that show;) We miss you as well and SR is STILL a part of your life now, just not as much!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Amanda- wow...that gave me chills.you story waz very touching to me. When I heard this story, everytime i want 2 cry. Amanda I don't think I could ever deal with that. It would be soo hard. Like last year my dad had to move to Georgia because there was so jobs in Ohio so he moved down there and we had no say in it and hes still down there. Shortly after all this madness happened my mom came out and told us that we might have to move to Georgia. I felt like my heart was crushed in 2 seconda. I had no clue what you do. All i did was cry. All I thought about was losing my SR family and i couldn't handle that. We never moved down there but we always might. But It seemed like i would lose SR forever but I knew i would always have SR in my heart.
I remember you were at Mt.Rushmore last year! I never got to talk to you tho.. :( I wanted to soo bad but I never had the chance. I wanted to just run up to you and give you a big hug! You are such an awesome person. Like i dont even have the words to say how amazingly awesome you are!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Kelli, Not in the same way....not in the way i want it to be.

  72. Dee, Thanks...Alot...I miss SR i miss my 2nd family. Thats what I think of SR...my second family. Your family gives you life and teaches you stuff and thats what SR did for me. It taught me to live without pills.

And Dee let me know if your going to Mt. Rushmore this year let me know. We will have to meet up. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. And im veryyy happy about that! Im glad that youur not takin pills!

And ok i will!! That would be amazing! when i find ill tell you!! :D I can't wait! I hope I can go. I wanna see like everyone! :) How amazing would that be if everyone that is talking on here went to Mt.Rushmore! it would be like boom..awesomeness. lol. that would be the coolest thing ever in life! :D

    ReplyDelete
  74. Dee, hahaha TOTALLY!!!!!! I miss everyone!!! I soo ready for Mt. Rushmore i already have a place to stay for a few months. I just need my tax money from when i working in Iowa and i will be buyin my plane ticket in a few weeks. Im just ready for "family" time. That and i need a MAJOR stress reliever session!!!!

Oh and if you ever do end up moving to Georgia let me know. I would like to hang and get to know you.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Wow... Actually, I think it was Amanda's story that Steve told when I saw SR for the first time. It really touched me. I probably got all teared up then just like I did when I read this. (I bet when I do shows I'll cry on stage at least once because of stories like that. That's how you know it's a good story.)

Kelli- I drum with my feet only if my friends have my hands pinned down... Which they have started to do...

My friend sent another friend to chat with me. I wish she'd do it herself for once. The person who talked to me said that it wasn't a clique, I said it was, etc. The person said my friend was sick of fighting with me about how she acts. I said I'm not going to hold my tongue if something isn't right. Not anymore. I've spent long enough keeping silent and it wasn't working for me. At least we're talking again. Thanks for everyone's help and support.

I want to go to Mount Rushmore, but thus far the only song I can do decently is YMCA.

    ReplyDelete
  76. IM SO EXCITED!! :D man your all set lol. thats so awesome! man if I were you I would be SOOO excited!!! I hope I can go know.

And Ok that works! if I dont move down there we can still hang because I go down there in the summer and stuff for a month so we can hang then! that would be soo awesome! where do u live at in Georgia? My dad lives in Tifton.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sonia, STOP LIEING!!!!!!!!!! I seen you at my last show and at my last practice with YOUR site and your good stop giving yourself a hard time!!!!

Dee, I live in Albany...or in other word southwesteren part...I'm actully moving back to Iowa in late July early August....when will you be down here???

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sonja- Isnt that annoying when friends do that, sending other people. Well you know what that means?!?!well what i think it means that she knows you right she just doesnt want to admit it... or shes chicken. lol. but do you think you did the right thing? If so then.. you goo chickyy!! LoL i think you did! :D but if she doesnt get it then it went right over her head but if thats it then i think it will backup and pop in her head and make her be like wow... im dumb. she was right lol. :D

Amanda- DUDE...my dad lives 40 mins away from you!!! umm im really not sure when ever school ends for us i think in june... but im not sure when i find out ill tell you tho.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Dee- I definitely hate when people do that. I can't really work things out through other people and through notes. (Hers was so mean. I hung it off my cymbal and crashed it like fifty times.) I think I'll keep working on her reluctance to speak to me face-to-face. I second guess myself a lot, but I think that I did the right thing. I just wish I could help her understand.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sonja -yea. well are you ok tho.? like your the one that has 2 deal with her snarkyness. (btw snarky is my fav. word ever lol just sayin...its fun to say lol (: ) Wait how old are you guys? Well all you can do is think possitive. keep working with her maybe it will click. Never give up and believe in your self! :D

    ReplyDelete
  81. Dee- She's put me through a lot, but I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a strong base of people to lean on. If she is being snarky (fun word, I agree) there are other friends at school I can lean on. Actually, I'm more worried about her. Thanks for asking though.

My friends are a lot of different ages. She's sixteen. I'm going to be seventeen in March.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sonja I have seen you play as week and you are doing fine. I may be at your next practice with Steve depending on my audition time, so then I can prove to you that you are, only in person instead of online.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Sonja-Im happy your 1 of the lucky ones. and i know i love that word lol. :D and yea just try to talk to her. IF that dont work you can try to do her method of writting a note or doing it thru. a friend. even tho that kind of stinks because you cant say what you want to say if a friend does it but just do what you can. thats all you can do. i wish she would stop bing snarky for 5 seconds so u can sort things out.

ha so are all mine. lol. im going to be 16 in march!!! what day is yours???

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sonja-Mines the 8th. lol!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  85. Dee- They aren't too far apart.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Dee- That's a cute name. I have two cats. The one that jumped into my drum bag is named Wizard. The other is a girl called Nina. They spend their days stealing food.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sonja- Really awwww.. thats cute!! lol nice.lol. my cat eat, sleeps, and poops...thats it. lol
i always wanted a dog. but my mom doesnt like them >_< but oh well. i got a cat i guess..lol. ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  89. Dee- That's a cat for a. ;) So I' going to completely change the subject again, and ask what kind of stuff you do at school.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Sonja- lol its cool. what do ou mean like subjects or like after shool activities? or both?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I wish I had a cat, or any pet for that matter! Not to change subjects back or anything!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Sonja - you NEED to go to Mt. Rushmore. You are doing awesome so far, and it doesn't matter one bit how many songs you know! You'll do just fine!

I've really enjoyed this dialog - and seeing all the friendships that are forming right before our eyes....one of the reasons why I am part of SR!

    ReplyDelete
  93. When I first joined and I played the drums at my first show I loved seeing the smiles on peoples faces and I love playing those drums even if the parts are really hard.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I was way behind! so many comments!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Sonja, You have to go to Mt. Rushmore!!! I remember my first year out there and wow you SOOOOO MANY new people its so cool. I have friend like across the country and its all thanks to Mt. 116. Dee- I mean both, I guess.

    Kelli- Cats are awesome.

Mary, Kelli, Amanda, and Dee- It sounds like an amazing experience. Also for some reason my little brother wants to go, even though he hasn't shown much interest in SR. (Aside from critiquing my drumming)

    Tonia-Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Sonja-lol. ok well. im in algebra part 2. Ilove it! I love math a lot idk why but I do. well I like it because i think its easy. um the same old boringness. lol. eng, hard bio that doesnt make sence, and us history anddd GERMAN!!! love german its very confusing but I love it! Ich liebe! but yeah. out of school stuff im in german club and thats like pretty much it. like they have this group called HEART. Its a group that goes around toto different schools and talk to younger kids about doing drugs and smoking isnt good at all. I wanted to be in it so bad but its like at 7 on tuesdays and we have drum prac every tuesday 6-8 but its at the same place..well most of the time. but i peek in everynow and then so I know what they are doing. But yeah thats pretty much it lol. How about you?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Dee- I have algebra two as well. I dunno if our schools teach the same stuff though. I have AP Lit, which is fun because the teacher is great, AP Bio which isn't fun because the teacher is kind of bad. I like Bio though. Spanish, where my teacher (mi maestra) gets flashbacks to high school when I drum on the table, health with my black belt health teacher (she's awesome) and econ, which I am indifferent to.

After school I do theater and Archery. I love Archery, but I keep messing up my grip on the bow and I always have bruises on my arm from it.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Sonja-thats awesome!! wow. yea like idk i just dont like bio we are going these thing and it just dont maken sence. my eng teacher is awesome hes a dork it makes me laugh. my us history teacher is funny and makes fun of me because he will say somethin and i wont get it at all and then like 20mins later i get it. lol. its only in that class he makes me feel stupid. lol :) and my german teacher Herr Jones is awesome! he is my fav. he so funny and tells jokes and no1 gets em but i do lol so we laugh and laugh becuz it goes right over peoples heads it awesome! :D

    ReplyDelete
  120. What are you doing in Bio?

I love my teachers... Well, most of them... My English teacher lets my class crack jokes all hour.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Sonja- idk what its called its some square thing idk. lol .>_< i would see what it is but i dont have it with me. i dont get it at all. >_< all i know is somethin crosses and idk. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Dee does it have to do with dominate and ressesive traits?!? I love those things! It's been two years since I was in bio so I don't remember what they are called any more!:( You both can come take my Functions/Statictis/Trig final for me on Monday if you would like! I have no idea what I am doing in it!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Thats what I thought Jovanna! i was good at bio! Kelli I will take your FST test, if you take my English test! I would probably get you an A! :) I am way good at FST! My class occasionally thinks that I am a genius, but then they realize that I am not good at any other class! Ha But I actually am just not as good as math! I still dont like math even being good at it its too time consuming and not very fun! but atleast I understand and have the ability to teach my class due to the fact that my teacher is not very good at her job! but she tries...so Its okay

    ReplyDelete
  124. Yes that's it! Haha the only reason I hate FST and I'm not taking it next semester is the teacher. Out of the 13 seniors only 2 are returning. This happened with our math teacher last year as well. In my 4 years of high school I have now had 6 math teachers! Okay so we had my normal teacher, a student teacher, and a long term replacement while the normal teacher was on maternity leave in one year but still!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Jovanna- thats what its called!! Punnet squares. I dont get them at all.

Like today we had to take a quiz on it and like yea...i didnt fo so hot on it...i dont think. >_< it confuse's me. >_< Like my teacher's like if you need help you can ask me but she gets mad at you and yells at you... i dont like to get yelled at so i never asked... i have to do 10 for homework and like theres like one the is Really big and yea its so to be interesting but ill get it sooner or later! I won't give up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  126. Ok wow im Not in school anymore lets not confuse me on here too pleasse!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Dee- Ugh. We're just starting that stuff. I learned about them in regular Bio. We did a lab today in AP Bio to find out our blood types. It involved pricking our fingers with needles and doing our own bloodwork. Let's just say that I have problems with anything to do with needles. I also have problems with blood in conjunction with needles. My friend did most of my lab work while I was on the floor with my head against the table trying not to faint. (I didn't know I had THAT big of a problem with needles.)

Kelli- I love those squares too. I have some for homework that I actually look forwards to doing.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I did blood typing freshmen year. Our teacher did the pricking an he was vicious! I can still faintly see the prick and that was four years ago! Sonja I wish that is what I had for homework, but I have finals Monday an Tuesday:( but I guess it's ok because I only have 83 days left. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Kelli- There was NO WAY my Bio teacher was pricking my finger. I'm not always sure she likes me. The school nurse did mine. They had some spring loaded ones that you put on your finger and pushed the button. It was horrible.

I'm so glad my school doesn't do finals. (We prefer project-based evaluations. It's a new learning model we are trying called Expeditionary Learning. Actually, we never really believed in tests, because we were founded by a bunch of frustrated parents looking for something different)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Sonja-yea i dont like it at all. lol and man my teacher was talkig about that today. lol. yeah idk im ok with needles and blood. im surprised tho. Well idk, when I was little i used to fall and bleed a lot so idk. but man... our school was doing that H1N1 shot thing and my mom made me get it and man... it didnt hurt but like the needle was LoNg and shes like you might feel alittle pain and she like stabs it in my arm. no lie like i waz like wow... um that was kind of different. and she was luaghing and me.. >_< then i was like man your not supposed to be laughing at me you could like move and yeah.lol it was very interesting. lol. she said I made her day idk how i did but i did lol ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  131. I had to get the H1N1shot as well! I swear people at the school just like stabbing needles in me! Sonja we didn't get any fancy spring loaded ones:(

    ReplyDelete
  132. Kelli- i know. man... i dont like that.lol. i dont enjoy people i dont even know stabbing be. well i dont like anyone stabbing me.lol. but im glad its over.

    ReplyDelete
  133. i stayed in SR because i have met so many people and have gone so many places i would have never thougt that i would see. yes the beats do get harder and i have been missing a lot of practices for cheerleading ugh... but i always practice. i will admit that i have had some doubts about staying in SR because i am so busy but i guess my love for the drums and the message and veryonein it has made me wanna stay. i could never quit. im not a person who gives up and everyone in my group knows that :) what about you guys? have you ever had any doubts about thw group cuz of school activities?

    ReplyDelete
  134. Dee and Kelli- My school isn't doing H1N1 shots. it think it's cause we're a really small (and broke) school. I have to get it though. Great...

Colleen- I'm a bit worried that theater and SR will clash when I start doing shows. I'm a main character, so lets just say if I miss a major rehearsal my theater director will KILL ME. So I know how you feel. I hate having to give up one thing I love for another.

    ReplyDelete
  135. How small is your school Sonja? We have 700 kids k-prep through 12 with my graduating class being 46 at the moment, but I'm sure by May 23 we will be about 39.

    ReplyDelete
  136. We have around 400 kids K-12. I don't even know how many people are in my grade. We all kind of blend together.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Sonja, i wish my school had a theatre activity. my school right now is falling to poeces we cant even afford to fix it.. but yea, if i miss a game my coach will frek out on me...lol

    ReplyDelete
  138. Colleen- Yeah, our school is going down the tubes. We have no sports and no music. It's frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Colleen-COLLEEN!!! HIII!!!! i miss you!! But anywho. lol you cant leave me man! i love you! Your my sis that ive always wanted..even tho i got 4 but your not liek them lol! i will be a lost, sad puppy in a forest if you leave me. (idk where the puppy thing came from but yea lol ;) ) You know im always here for you NO matter what! call me up! im here! :D

    ReplyDelete
  140. Colleen- also i forgot to answer you question sorry. So here it go. No i don't think ive ever thought about leaving SR. sr makes me me. I dont think I could handle not seeing eveyone, not leaning new things, not meeting new people, and not sharing the message. But High School is a busy thing. You got all the homework, you have all the school activities but you deal with it I guess. You never give up the crazyy. You do whatever it takes to get everything done, and You believe in you self. Last year was soo crazy for me but I dealt with it! I never gave you. Because I knew if I quit what I love, like SR I would never be happy. you have your good times and you have your bad, but you just have to work around it. :) Its hard now but it will get better! have faith! :) and.. i love u chicka! LoL :D

    ReplyDelete
  141. Thanks Dee...you are one of the people in the group that understands my situation the most. I dont thi k that i would have gotten this far without the group to back me up lol :)

    ReplyDelete
  142. hey sonja, i can definatly relate to you, our middle school has to shut down thats how bad it is lol

    ReplyDelete
  143. Colleen- no problem! I here for you no matter what! :D We should get together and drum/rock out! LoL i miss you man! >_<

    ReplyDelete
  144. Colleen, I worried about that when I first joined. I guess I just work around it. Like this weekend I have my district group speech meet and my mom is bringing me a car so I can leave from there to go to a show two hours away from my speech thing.

    ReplyDelete
  145. When i first joined and i played the druns at my first show i loved seeing fhe smiles on peoples faces and i love playing those druns even if they are really hard and fast like High School Musical.

  146. Dee-i know we will have to do somethind...and soon, im deprived of you!!!! haha

Kelli- thank you, i am really trying to make everything work out okay, its just...stressful and sometimes i just dont know what to do anymore. i have midterms all week and i can barely study for them cause of cheerleading and babysitting. its really insane. i just really hope everything works out :)

    ReplyDelete
  147. Colleen-woot!lol and everything will work out you'll do awesome on you midterms! i know it! you start! :D believe in yourself..I do. :)

    ReplyDelete
  154. Why do I drum? Hmmmm. Why do I breathe? Rhythm is life. I think we are all wired that way, we just lose the connection over time. Then once we take up the drums it all floods back. It is very primal and a natural way to connect. That is why it is the perfect vehicle for changing the world. You can't feel bad while beating on the drum. And two people beating together is twice as powerful. Three people, four times as powerful. And it gets exponential from there. Mt. Rushmore, enough postive energy that it would register from space. But beyond the drumming, it is the positive environment, the challenges, the opportunity to learn, teach and connect that keep me looking forward to each and every practice and cherishing each performance. Also, it is awesome seeing the fellow members grow in skill and confidence. For example, Devin (zooman) mentioned being shy. Well, we had a news crew doing a live spot, and when the reporter asked for a "kid" volunteer, Devin's hand shot up, and even though he was not even given the questions in advance, he represented us like a pro. Remember, this was live TV. Wow! That says a lot about the power of this group, that he believes so strongly, and had faith that God would provide the words. Just one example of one member living the steps of success.
